Als ik de werkkamer van het Historisch Archief in de Raffinaderij Rotterdam binnenkom, tikt op de achtergrond een
ouderwetse klok. Het geeft een gezellige en huiselijke sfeer. De kamer is volgeladen met prachtige historische stuk-
ken, zoals een verzameling oude Esso-tankwagons en -auto's en een poppenhuis met een kantoortafereel uit de
beginjaren van de onderneming. Miel en Eileen Citroen dragen al meer dan tien jaar met hart en ziel zorg voor deze
wondere wereld van ExxonMobiI's verleden.
Het Historisch Archief valt onder de verantwoordelijkheid van de afdeling Public Affairs. Miel startte in 1960 zijn car-
rière bij Esso in de raffinaderij en bleef er tot zijn pensioen. Miel, die van plan was om tijdens zijn pensioen iets in
een museum te gaan doen, besefte dat Esso Nederland zelf over een museum beschikte dat echter verwaarloosd
was en meldde zich graag aan. Al snel kreeg ook zijn vrouw Eileen de microbe te pakken. 'Ik was vanaf de eerste
dag verliefd', beaamt Eileen.
We komen van ver 'Toen we in 1993 startten in het toenmalige museum was dit gevestigd in het hoofdkantoor in Den
Haag. Ik ging er samen met Eileen een keer per week heen. We wilden het inrichten als een historisch archief' vertelt
Miel. 'Het verschil met het museum is dat het archief niet toegankelijk is voor publiek, uitsluitend voor belanghebbenden.'
Daarnaast wilden we een nieuw inven-tarissysteem bedenken dat niet alleen ons maar alle medewerkers in staat stelt
om gemakkelijk iets op te zoeken. Want iedereen die iets wil weten is hier altijd welkom, ook als wij er niet zijn. In beide
opzetten zijn we geslaagd.'
Grootste kamer.
In 1995 verhuisde het museum naar de raffinaderij in Rotterdam. 'Daar zijn we nooit rouwig om geweest, want in Rot-
terdam hebben we nu een grote showroom in het administratiegebouw en nog vier opslagruimtes. Je kunt je wel voor-
stellen wat een ongelooflijke schat hier ligt aan publicaties, foto's en stukken uit het verleden van de onderneming. En
het aantal spullen groeit nog. Medewerkers brengen zaken binnen, maar wij bezoeken ook vaak rommelmarkten en
kunnen in overleg met Public Affairs nog hele mooie Esso- of Mobilmemorabilia op de kop tikken. Zo kochten we bij-
voorbeeld vorig jaar nog een prachtige oude Mobil-pomp.'
Ieder zijn taken.
Zoals het in een goed huishouden hoort. zijn de taken tussen Miel en Eileen netjes verdeeld. Miel is veel bezig met de
reparatie en het onderhoud van de museumstukken en vragen op technisch gebied. 'Want niet alles wat we krijgen
of kopen is in even goede staat.' Eileen bekommert zich meer om de administratieve kant van de zaak en houdt het
inventaris-systeem up-to-date.
'In principe zijn we hier een dag in de week, op Dinsdag.
Beroemd en veel gevraagd.
Het vele werk van Miel en Eileen werpt duidelijk vruchten af. Op de raffinaderij vind je zes vitrinekasten die zij inrichtten
met leuke gadgets uit hun collectie. Zo kan je nu in de hal een kast bewonderen met tientallen verschillende Esso-,
Mobil-of ExxonMobilbekers. 'En hoe bekender we zijn, hoe meer we gevraagd worden.' zegt Miel. 'We werken bijvoor-
beeld mee aan Open Dagen van ExxonMobil zoals bijvoorbeeld de Familiedagen 2003 op de Raffinaderij Antwerpen,
waar we een museum hadden ingericht voor de bezoekers.'
Dudokstation in ere hersteld.
Een prachtig project waar Miel en Eileen veel plezier aan hebben beleefd, is de restauratie van het authentieke Dudok-
station uit 1953, dat onlangs van Rosmalen naar het Nationaal Auto Museum in Raamsdonksveer is verhuisd. 'Wij heb-
ben het ingericht zoals het er oorspronkelijk in 1953 uitzag. Het leuke is dat je veel research moet doen in oude publi-
caties en foto's om te kijken hoe het er destijds uitzag. We hebben zelfs nog enkele mannen gevonden die daar vroeg-
er gingen tanken en ons hierbij konden helpen.'
Regelmatig bezoeken ExxonMobil-mede-werkers uit de hele wereld het Archief.
Een ding is duidelijk, het Historisch Archief zoals het vroegere museum nu heet, is een unicum binnen ExxonMobil.
Wanneer het vrolijke echtpaar ermee ophoudt? 'Nu in ieder geval nog niet want het is onze hobby. En een nuttige ook,
want we nemen veel werk uit handen van Public Affairs.
Twee vliegen in een klap!'

treasures glitter in Rotterdam.Upon entering the workroom of the Esso Historical Archives, I was welcomed by the tick-tock of an old-fashioned
clock which created a homely atmosphere.
The room is neatly packed with memoriabilia; a collection of tank-wagons, doll's house with office-clerks from the
time when the company was formed.
During the last 10 years Miel and Eileen Citroen have cared with heart and soul for the wonder world of Exxon-Mobil's
past history. The historical archives are the responsibility of Public Affairs. Miel began his career at Esso refinery in
1960 and stayed until his pension. He had already retirement plans to do "something in a museum", when he realiz-
ed that Esso Nederland had their own museum which had been neglected for years. Eileen, who always had a love-
affair with "stuffy old documents" was right-away part of the team.
We come from afar.
When we started in 1993, the former museum was in the Head Office in Den Haag and we went once a week. We
decided to structure the museum as historical archives, the difference being that a museum is open to the public,
but archives are only open to a select public who are interested in Esso's history'. Beside that, we wanted to intro-
duce a new filing system that not only we, but also colleagues would be able to find their own historic data. Every-
one who is searching for data is welcome in the archives, even if we're not present. In both these aspects we have
suceeded.
Largest space.
In1995 the archives were removed from Den Haag to Rotterdam which was a great improvement. We now have a
showroom, a store-room, and part of the cellar in the main building and are able to store the objects which we re-
ceive almost every week
Miel says: ´It's unbelievable the amount of publications, photos, advertisements and contracts we have in store and
it's still growing. Colleagues from the refinery often bring in objects and documents for the archives but Eileen and I
also search in car-boot sales if we can find anything related to Esso. Last year we found an old Mobil-pomp which
is now resplendent in the hall of the main building´.
To each his own.
Every good housekeeping has it's own rules, likewise our workload.
Miel answers the technical questions and is often busy repairing the objects which are the "worse of the wear".
Eileen does the research and administration and keeps the inventory up-to-date.
Our museum day is on Tuesday.
Renowned and greatly in demand.
The amount of work which Miel en Eileen spend on their project has it's gratifications. In the refinery there are 6 show-
cases in which the cream of the collection is displayed. In the hall one glass case is filled with Esso, Mobil, and Exxon
Mobil beakers which were donated by colleagues. The more renowned we become, the more we are asked to organise
exhibitions. We lend our assistance to Open Houses etc. The highlight was in 2003 when we were asked to organise
a display of the Esso museum for the Family Days in Antwerp, celebrating the 50 years anniversary of the refinery.
Dudok petrolstation restored.
A project which Miel and Eileen enjoyed was the restauration of the 1953 Dudok petrol station which has recently been
moved from the Autotron in Rosmalen to
the National Auto Museum in Raamsdonksveer. ´We were able to furnish the interior in the original state. It's fun research-
ing all the old photos and publications to find out how it looked originally´ .
Regularly ExxonMobil colleagues from all over the world visit the historic archives.
One thing is certain: it is an unicum inside ExxonMobil.
When asked when this light-hearted couple will finish, the answer was: ´In any case not now, because it is our hobby
and essential to Public Affairs. We unload them from lots of work´.
It works both ways.
