Dear Sir,
I tried many sources on intemet to get some information about a dutch tanker Charlois, torpedoed during the first WW.
Please read next message and may be you can help me.
The 19th of March 1917 disappeared a Dutch tanker "Charlois" on her way from New York to Rotterdam.
In the sixtees of last century it came out that she was torpedoed by a German submarine U 59.
This event was mentioned in the book "Der Handelskrieg mit U-Booten", part number 4, page 69.
That book was written by ARNO SPINDLER.
On board of that ship was a brother of my mother. His father (my grandfather) died in 1953 and he never knew what happened to his son.
As long as he lived he believed (hoped) that his son left the ship in N.Y.
This became a kind of "family-legend".
I would very much appreciate if tyou would be so kind to copy this page and mail it to me.

I do not own a copy of Spindler IV. I do, however, have something that is even more interesting: a copy of U 59's war diary (KTB) on microfilm.
I can scan the part about the sinking of Chariois for you; it might take a week or two to do as I need to go to the local university to do it.
The location of the sinking was 57° 21' N, 04° 33' E.
Best wishes,
Michael Lowrey.

Michael,
You are absolutely correct. This sounds even more interesting.
I hope it is not too much trouble for you to copy this war diary.
Just curious, which local university would that be?
I am very exited about the outlook to hear something more about what happened to the "Charlois" after nearly a century.
It means a lot to me!
Looking forward hearing from you soon again, I remain,
With best regards,
Bas Vieveen.

Bas,
lt’s not a problem at all. I am planning on looking at some other KTBs this Saturday as well at the Umversitv of North Carolina at Charlotte.
I can scan a few pages for free and e-mail them to myself and then on to you.
The descriptions of attacks are often brief — it would be unusual if the commanding officer wrote more than a paragraph or two about a sinking.
Best wishes,
Michael
