The New York Times, February 28, 1891, Sunday

ICE FIELDS SIGHTET AT SEA.

The German steamship Burgermeister Petersen, Capt. Beckmann, which arrived yesterday from Hamburg, reports meeting, in latitude 45° 45' north, longitude 46° 30' west, a four-masted English steamship, which signaled that she had been between the ice. The Petersen accordingly steered a more southerly course and succeeded in avoid-ing the ice fields.
Cart. Peters of the steamship Charlois, which arrived yesterday from Amsterdam, reports that while in latitu-de 45°, longitude 48°, he had to steer for several hours to the southward in order to clear a mass of ice. The north German Lloyd steamship Spree, from Bremen, reports meeting. on the 24th inst. large quantities of ice and two immense bergs.
