Built in 1962, by Jakobson Shipyard of Oyster Bay, New York (hull #406) as the Esso Maryland for Esso Shipping of Wilmington, Delaware.
The tug was later renamed as the Exxon Maryland.
When she was acquired by the Eklof Marine Corporation of Staten Island, New York she was renamed as the Maryland.
In 1993, the Eklof Marine Corporation was acquired by K-Sea Transportation of New York where the tug retained her name.
In 2011, K-Sea Transportation was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas, where the tug retained her name.
She is a twin screw tug rated at 3,010 horsepower.
