THE Esso Bangor (Hull 501), third of a series of six tankers being built for the Esso Shipping Company, was launched November 25, 1952, at 12:30 P.M. The tanker was christened by Mrs. Eger V. Murphree of Summit, New Jersey, wife of the president of the Standard Oil Development Company. Attending Mrs. Murphree as her Maid Of Honor was her daughter, Miss Sarah V. Murphree.
The Esso Bangor is another important addition to the growing Esso Fleet. The 628-foot vessel follows the Esso
Newark and Esso Chester. Others in the process of construction at the Shipyard are the Essa Gloucester, Esso Huntington, and Esso Florence.

When the Esso Bangor is delivered in January, l953, she will he capable of transporting 229,615 barrels of oil at a speed in excess of 16 knots. This class of tanker has an overall length of 628 feet; a beam of 86’-6”; and a displacement of 34.640 long tons. ln addition to accommodations for fifty-seven officers and crew members the tankers are also equipped to transport four passengers.
The Esso Bangor slid into the James River from Shipway Eight, the site of the launching of many famous aircraft carriers and other naval vessels. This shipway is of the semisubhmerged type. A gate at the outboard end of the shipway is opened prior to launching and the water enters approximately one-third of the distance of the Way.
The launching party for the Esso Bangor arrived from New York in three airplanes at Patrick Henry Airport at 11:00 A.M. Also on the launching stand to witness the event was the Shipyard's Board of Directors which held its monthly meeting at the Yard at 10:00 The Board has made it a practice to meet at the Yard at least once during each year
