I know a bit more about this photo.
This must be the early 1960s, the place is the Bay of Bengal off the city of Chittagong in what was then East Pakistan and now is Bangladesh, and the ship is a small coastal oil tanker that made the tour of small communities along the lower Meghna (part of the
vast Ganges delta), delivering fuel.
The name of the ship is Esso Meghna. She was launched in 1944 in the USA, so she must have crossed the Pacific from America to Asia at least once. Her IMO (International Maritime Organisation) number was 5338373. She was purchased by Esso in 1964; her previous name being Stanvac Meghna. She remained in service until 2010 (last name: Nirapad, which is Sanskrit for "prosperous"), after which she was withdrawn from service.
Her dead weight tonnage was 1118 t, her length overall 56 m and her beam 9 metres.
Her first skipper while she flew the Esso colours (if this picture were of higher resolution you could see him on the bridge) told me that she was a rustbucket and that all that held her together was the paint. In that case, and in view of the fact that she remained in service (and therefore, presumably, afloat) for at least another 45 years, that paint must have been of exceptionally high quality.
