The photos of the damage done to the ESSO COLON (3) are very dramatic, and I am pleased to be able to provide some details concerning the collision in which that damage occurred.
The ESSO COLON collided with the 22,595 ton Liberian tanker CITIES SERVICE VALLEY FORGE off Singapore on 13 December 1969. The CITIES SERVICE VALLEY FORGE was built as the W. ALTON JONES in 1954 and renamed in 1959. Repairs to the ESSO COLON were considered to be uneconomical, so it was sold for scrapping and delivered to Kaohsiung in Taiwan on 15 May 1970. However, it was resold, rebuilt and renamed ALLIANCE SUCCESS in 1970 under the Panamanian flag, HONGKONG GALLANTRY in 1972 and TASMAN VOYAGER in 1974. It was broken up in 1976.
