Vol XIII, March/April 1949, No. 3
She is the second of fourteen tankers, each of 26,555 deadweight tons. Being built bij Standard Oil Company
(New Jersey). Four of the vessels are being built by Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Chester, Pen-
nsylvania.
The Esso Suez has a designed speed of 16 knots. On her trial trip under full load conditions she made better
than 17 knots over the measured mile of the Delaware breakwater course. On the trial trip the tanks of the
Esso Suez were filled with water ballast equivalent to the weight of nine and a half million gallons of gasoline,
her rated volumetric cargo oil capacity.

The geared-turbine propulsion unit for the Esso Suez built by the General Elecric Company delivers 12,500
shp at 112 rpm. It is a cross compound, impulse turbine consisting of one high-pressure and one low-pressure
ahead turbine. An astern turbine, built into the low pressure casing, is an integral part of the low pressure unit.
Turbine drive shafts are connected to the single screw through speed-reducing gears.
Auxiliary power is furnished by two 400-kw turbines Generator sets supplemented by mechanical-drive tur-
bines for driving cargo pumps, boiler feed pumps and fans. Both tvpes of auxiliary turbines operate off the
main boilers. Oil-fired boilers provide normal steam at 850 psi and 850°F.

The Esso Suez is the first tanker constructed by our yard in almost eight years. The Esso Columbia, our
Hull 372, also build for Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) was deliverd on April 28, 1941.
Recognizing that it is in natural interest to have large, high speed modern tankers under American
registry the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), has placed the American flag. This was accomplished
through the U.S. Maritime Commission's authorization for the transfer to Panamanian registry of tanker ton-
nage of carrying Capacity, but in slower ships of older prpulsion.
