History: Built as Prometheus, 1914 renamed Cushing, 1918 renamed Chinampa, 1924 sold to Italy and renamed Americano
for Ditta G.M. Barbagelata, Genoa. On 8 Dec, 1941, the Americano was seized at Tampico by Mexico and renamed Tuxpam.
Notes on loss: At 07.24 hours on 27 Jun, 1942, U-129 fired a spread of two torpedoes at the unescorted Tuxpam (Master Adolfo
Meza Burgos) and had to evade a circle-runner by diving, but the other torpedo hit the vessel. The tanker had settled by the stern
but did not sink, so the U-boat surfaced and opened fire with the deck gun at 08.15 hours. The ship caught fire and sank
after 52 rounds had been fired.
