Steel 4-masted barque, LOA 332 ', Beam 45 ', Depth 26 ', 3288 tons, 135,000 cases
The first of the US-flag ships to be ready, Astral was launched in December 1900, from Arthur Sewall's yard in Bath,
Maine, where she was built at a cost of $190,000.
Astral was towed around Cape Cod to New York for her first cargo of case oil by Maverick, a tow steamer operated
by Socony's Lighterage Department.
The US-flag ships were built to the standards of the famous Yankee clippers at a shipyard which built some of the best.
They held their own with the kerosene clippers under the British flag, and with sailing vessels in other trades.
astral's career with Socony was comparatively short. In 1910, she was sold to Alaska Packers Association, delivery
at San Francisco. Under the new name Star of Zealand she served her new owners fishing in the Bering Straits until
1935. Lloyd's Register does not list her after that year.

A four-masted steel ship built in 1900 by Arthur Sewall & Co., Bath, ME.
Dimensions 101,26×13,86×7,92 meters [332'3"×45'4"×26'0"] and tonnage: 3292 GRT and 2987 NRT.
There was no figurehead or other decoration except for a black stripe at the level of the main deck on the otherwise white
painted hull. She was rigged with dubbel top- and topgallant sails and royal sails. Later re-rigged with a baldheaded rig.
