The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey will launch today, the largest tank steamer afloat, when the "John D. Archbold" slides into the water at Newport News, Va. The boat, replaces one of the same name which was sunk by the Germans in the war. It was built by the Newport News Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Company and is of 20,300 deadweight tons. There will remain only one more steamer to be launched to complete the tanker building program of the Standard Oil Company which called for an Investment of $45,000,000. The "William Rockefeller" will be the last boat to be launched under this program and it will be of the same weight as the boat to be launched today. She will probably be completed by October.
The vessels are 572 feet long, with a beam of seventy-five feet. They were designed expressly to bring Mexican crude oil to Atlantic refineries. Each will have a capacity of approximately 135,000 tons and can be used in the European trade.
