The fourth CHARLES PRATT-class tanker built for Standard Oil of NJ was F.Q. BARSTOW, whose contract was signed on Julv 2S, 1915, the same day as that for WM. G. WARDEN. Her keel was laid in Shipway 7 on May 16,1916, and she was launched on March 17,1917. The sponsor for F.Q. BARSTOW was Mrs. W.A. Barstow, who christened the ship at about 3:30 P.M. on that date,
The new tanker was delivered on the following April 12, and she started ihe same routine service along the Gulf and East coasts as her sisters,. Liike them, she had her shelter deck opened up in 1923, reducing her gross tonnage from 10,289 to 9.003. Her career very closely paralleled that of her immediate predecessor, and she served Standard Oil of NJ through the 1920s and 19 Os without incident.
As war came, she made 63 voyages and carried 6,5 million barrels of cargo safely between 1939 and 1944. In May 1942 she rescued 29 survivors of the torpedoed Dutch ship HECTOR between New York and Carapito. She made 16 voyages in 1943 then, in April 1944 she too was sold to the government for wartime service. She survived the war undamaged only to be scrapped in 1946.
