"Socony 23", 229118. Steel single screw tug built 1929 at Mariner's Harbor, NY,
as hull no. 790 by United DDInc. for the Standard Transportation Co., New York,
NY. 91.5 x 22 x 10; 166 gt, 112 nt; double cylinder compound steam engine,
16-32 x 24, 550-ihp, by builder; one Scotch boiler, 12.5' x 11,' 1856 sq. ft.
HS, 155 psi WP. Transferred 1932 to Standard-Vacuum TranspCo., New York.
Transferred 1935 to Socony-Vacuum Oil CoInc., New York. Repowered 1949:
12-cylinder EMD Diesel, 8.75 x 10.5, 1200-bhp. Transferred 1955 to Socony Mobil
Oil CoInc., New York. Sold 1960 to McAllister Bros Inc., New York, and renamed
"Bruce A. McAllister". Sold 1974 to Gaelic Tugboat Co., Grosse Isle, MI, and
renamed "Killarney". Foundered 20 miles off Fairport Harbor, OH, 12 Septem-
ber1974, with no loss of life.

SOCONY 23
Built in 1929, by Bethlehem Steel of Staten Island, New York (hull #790) as the Socony 23 for the
Standard Oil company of New York, New York.
However, Standard Oil was broken up in 1911, due to the Sherman Antitrust Act. Vacuum Oil and Standard
Oil of New York (Socony) merged in 1931.
After the government gave up attempts to prevent it. The union, as the Socony Vacuum Corporation,
made them the company the third largest
(at the time) world oil company. Everest was given a salary job as President and remained with the company. In 1932,
the tug was transferred to the Socony Vacum Oil company.
In 1955, the tug was transferred to the Socony Mobil Oil Company Inc. of New York. Later that year, the
company became the Socony Mobil Oil Company. In 1963, it was renamed "Mobilgas" then just as "Mobil."
In 1960, she was acquired by McAllister Bros Inc. of New York, New York.
Where she was renamed as the Bruce A. McAllister.
In 1974, she was acquired by the Gaelic Tugboat Company of Grosse Isle, Michigan.
Where she was renamed as the Killarney.
She foundered 20 miles off Fairport Harbor, Ohio on the 12th of September 1974, with no loss of life.
She originally featured a double cylinder compound steam engine 16-32 x 24, rated at 550
(indicated) horsepower, with one Scotch boiler, 12.5' x 11,' 1856 sq. ft. HS, 155 psi WP.
In 1949, she was repowered with a 12-cylinder EMD Diesel, 8.75 x 10.5, for a rated 1,200 horsepower.
