Built in 1990, by Bollinger Machine Shop of Lockport, Louisiana (hull #208) as the Doc Candies for Otto Candies, LLC. of Des Allemands, Louisiana.
In 1995, the tug was chartered to the Mobil Oil Corporation where she was renamed as the Tecumseh.
In 2000, when Mobil Oil Corporation merged with Exxon to become Sea River Maritime the tug was renamed as S/R Providence.
In 2002, Sea River's assets where liqudated when the company was dissolved and the S/R Providence was acquired by Roehrig Maritime of Staten Island, New York where she was renamed as the Emma M. Roehrig, named for Roehrig Maritime founder Chris Roehrig's oldest daughter.
In 2007, Roehrig Maritime was acquired by K-Sea Transportation Partnership where she was renamed as the Greenland Sea.
In 2008, she was outfitted with a JAK 400 coupler system at Feeney's Shipyard in Kingston, New York. She's equipped for K-Sea's 80,000 bbl and 100,000 bbl barges.
In 2011, K-Sea Transportation was acquired by the Kirby Corporation of Channelview, Texas, where the tug retained her name.
She is powered by two General Motors Corporation Electoromotive Division L-16-CE-645-E2 16 cylinder main engines for a rated 4,200 horsepower.
