From Peter Broomhead he wrote to me ;
You have a picture of the Stanvac Manila in Wellington. I believe that I was the Radio Officer on her when that picture was taken. We arrived off Wellington just before Christmas 1956 and had to anchor in the bay to wait for a discharge berth. When we started engines to move onto the dock there was an explosion from the engine room which was a generator stator winding flashing to ground. There wasn’t a facility in New Zealand that could handle the rewinding. Standard Oil found a replacement on the US East coast and charted a cargo plane (Slick Airlines, “we fly anything anywhere”) that could handle the unit. They refueled in St Louis, LA, Hawaii and Fiji but had to land at the only field that could handle the load, that was a New Zealand Air Force base. The unit was then transferred to a barge to be delivered to the ship. The floating crane you see was there to take off the top of the engine room, lift out the defective generator and lower in the replacement. We were there for three weeks !
