Aspinet - 1901, ex Seneca -1913
LOA 402 ', Beam 52 '1", Depth 29 '1 ", 4848 gross tons, 186,000 cases.
Built 1901 at Russell's, Glasgow, Scotland, as Seneca. She came to Socony when Standard Oil
was dissolved in 1911. Renamed Aspinet in 1913.
The name honoured a Cape Cod Indian who, during the winter of 1622, when the Plymouth settlers
faced famine, brought them corn and beans and remained their staunch friend during the hard early
years of the colony.
Aspinet was a three-island, coal-burning general cargo ship with no provision for carrying bulk oil. Her main
engines were amidships, as were her steering engines, with chains and cables running aft to a huge rudder-
post quadrant on the poop deck. Her voyages were world-wide, and on her return trips she would
operate as a tramp, picking up cargoes where she could.
There is no record of her having been commandeered by the Admiralty for WWI, possibly because she was
war-useful in her regular itinerary. She continued as a general cargo carrier until January 1924 when she
was sold to a Japanese firm.
