World’s biggest dry-cargo ship by Ericksbergs
Reputed to be the largest dry-cargo vessel in the world, the 280,000-dwt ore/oil ship, Yard No. 665, is scheduled to be delivered towards the end of June by Erikshergs MV of Gothenburg to the Brostrom Group. The huge vessel was floated out of the builder’s 500,000-ton building dock in mid-March.
Length overall is llO5.6 ft (338 m), beam is 178.8 ft (54.56 m), molded depth is 95.1 ft (28.95 rn) and draft is 70.4 ft (21.69 m). From keel to funnel top, the height of the ship will be 187 ft (57 m), This means that the top of the funnel and the radar mast cannot be erected until after the ship has passed the Alvsborg Bridge on her way out from the Gota River.
Propulsion machinery consists of a single Eriksberg/Burmeister & Wain diesel, type K98GF, developing 41,000 bhp to give the ship a speed of 16 knots. The engine is said to be the most powerful of her kind in the world.
Work on the stern portion of the vessel began in mid-July 1972, and on the main portion of the hull in September. Weight of steel in the hull is 34,000 tons; the main engine weighs 1600 tons
Total weight of the ship when fitted out will be 40,200 tons.
Some other facts and figures about Yard No. 665: The propeller weighs 49 tons and has a diameter of 8.4 m; the rudder weighs 81 tons, has an effective surface area of 92 sq m; diameter of the anchor chain is 117 mm, and each anchor weighs 23 tons; area of the main deck is 16,100 sq m.
The ore cargo that the ship can carry would fill a unit train more than 19 miles (30 km) long. Cargo capacity for ore is 150,000 cu m and for oil 325,600 cu m.
