The Åsgard field lies on the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea, at a water depth of 320m, about 200 kilometres off mid-Norway. According to operator Statoil, it ranks among the largest developments on the Norwegian continental shelf, embracing a total of 52 wells drilled through 16 seabed templates.

The Åsgard A oil production ship arrived on the field on 8 February 1999 and became operational on 19 May. The FPSO was delivered by Aker Solutions as a complete engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract and is based on the Tentech 900 design by Aker Solutions.
The Åsgard A FPSO measures 278m in length and has a displacement of 184 300t, with production capacities of 220 000 bbl/d oil and 840 mm scf/d gas comp.
Gas production from the semi-submersible gas production platform Åsgard B began on 1 October 2000. The platform was also delivered by Aker Solutions as a complete engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract, including commissioning assistance.
