August 5th, 1946. BILLOWING SMOKE AND FLAME
engulf the Standard Oil tanker HOMESTEAD, after lightning hit it Monday at Jacksonville. The ship was unloading 30,000 barrels of gasoline at the time. Crewmen leaped for their lives into the St. Johns River. Gasoline spreading on the river caught fire and the flames rapidly spread to the dock. Buildings in the nearby area were rocket by the explosion as the fire raced through the vessel.

Additional Reports:
Reported Homestead hit by a lightning strike 5 August1946 and caught fire, while discharging gasoline at Jacksonville.
Fire extinguished and declared a constructive total loss. Sold for scrapping 1947 to Jos. L. Kammer, Cleveland. (BU at New Orleans)
