LOA 501' 7" Beam 68' Depth 37' ex KENYON 1945, 16,543 DWT, 133,813 bbls
Bethlehem turbines, cross-compound, Falk reduction gears, developing 7000 SHP at 85 RPM 15.0 knots
Launched 23 October 1943 at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland, and commissioned 24 November.
An US government T3 tanker, she was obtained in a war-time charter contract in which KENYON - not Socony-Vacuum’s choice of name - was swapped for GARGOYLE and LIEBRE.
She was immediately requisitioned by WSA for war service, first in transatlantic convoys to the UK. Then, in June 1944, she switched to the Pacific, Where she called at Majuro, Eniwetok, Pearl Harbor, Ulithi, Manus, and many other island stepping stones to Leyte and Okinawa.
Upon her return in November 1945, her name was changed to SACONA, an honored name among the Tewa Indians of New Mexico.
SACONA entered domestic service and stayed there steadily until 1949 when, along with most US-flag ships, she was employed for brief periods on foreign voyages to meet the special demands of the import-export trade.
