Built at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland, and commissioned 29 September 1943.
OCCIDENTAL Was obtained in a US government-sponsored "new ships for old" arrangement. She was built in exchange for ACME and BIRKENHEAD.
OCCIDENTAL Was requisitioned by WSA on commissioning day, and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific, ending up at Okinawa at the end of the War.
As she was a US government T3 tanker, she was given the “S” class name SIWANOY, when she was returned to Socony-Vacuum in November 1945. The name, which means "salt people", comes from an Indian tribe that lived along the north shore of Long Island Sound.
Except for annual voyages to the Persian Gulf, SIWANOY Was later employed in domestic service.
