Launched 27 March 1943 at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland, by
Mrs. Eunice L. Johanson, widow of Captain A.M. Johanson, the first fleetmaster to lose his life in WWII,
when the "Dixie Arrow" was sunk 7 May 1943.
"Samoset" was a T3 tanker, built to the design of the "M" class but powered as above and equipped
with two main cargo pumps instead of three. She was requisitioned for war duty on commissioning day. She
served in the Atlantic until after the Normandy invasion, when she shifted to the Pacific.
A typical itinerary shows that she left New York in April 1944, proceeded to Australia via the Panama
Canal, returned to California to load for India, then to Abadan for South Africa, thence to the
Netherlands Antilles to begin again.
That voyage covered a total of 48,000 miles between April and October.
Se was demobilised in December 1945, reconditioned and returned to domestic trade,
except for a brief interlude in the Persian Gulf in 1949.

"Samoset" on her last voyage with cargo to Rotterdam, fighting heavy seas in the Bay of Biscay.
From Rotterdam we took her to La Spezia to be scrapped - beautifully painted for the sad occasion.
