Sinking of two Standard Oil boats, beaching of another one, and the bombing of the U.S. gunboat, Panay, by Japanese bombardment, 25 Miles above Nanking, China, brought vigorous protests from President Roosevelt and the State Department after it was learned that at least one American sailor was killed and several injured. Terming the event one that he was "deeple shocked and concerned" over, the President protested the bombing in no uncertain terms to the Emperor of Japan. Above the Standard oil tanker , "Mei Hsia", which sank after bombing, is shown.
