Chief Mate George Brown, chart room, S.S. Eclipse 1974. To the left you can see the old bomber LORAN
(with the warning to shut off after using) and the usual navigation paraphernalia on the chart table, along with a
calculator in the lower right, which just coming out back then. George sports a khaki shirts, pants were still de
rigueur (along with black leather shoes) and some captains also required you wear a black tie in the officers
mess. Everything was open load and discharge then and the "mate" has his trusty ullage tape in his left hand;
a must for calculating rates!
Looking out the porthole of my cabin when I was AB on the SS Eclipse during the spring of 1973. The unlicensed
crew quarters were located in the hull on the main deck at the stern and when the old two house tankers were loaded
there wasn't much free-board. I left it open one night to get some air (no A/C) and wound up getting soaked when
weather kicked up.
Chief mates have come a long way!
