Tamaha
LOA 432', Beam 54'3", Depth 32'8", 1O,229 DWT, 74,098 bbls, Quadruple expansion engine 51" stroke
Launched 25 April and commissioned 16 June 1914 at Raylton Dixon & Company, Middlesbrough, England.
Upright and honest, respected by whites and Indians alike, the one-eyed Sioux chief Tamaha was seldom seen without his trademark - a stove-pipe hat! Tamaha means “rising moose”. He was one of two Sioux leaders who fought on the American side during the War of 1812.
TAMAHA served in and survived two world wars. During WWI her backhaul trips from the Far East were requisitioned by the British Admiralty for war cargoes. Between the wars she performed 23 years of miscellaneous foreign service, covering the Orient, the Levant and the Mediterranean. In January 1941, she was requisitioned for WW2 and put to lifting Admiralty fuel out of Abadan, Iran, for naval bases in the Mediterranean.
She was redelivered to Socony in February 1946 and retained in Mediterranean service until sold in August 1949 to Socony-Vacuum’s French affiliate, Société Anonyme Mazout Transports, by whom she was employed principally between France and her colonial possessions. In 1953 this 39-year-old tanker, worn and weary, was sold for the value of her steel.
