and build in 1929, as "Vacuoline", by Lithglows Ltd., Port Glasgow.

ex VACUOLlNE - 1934
Built 1929 at Lithgow's, Glasgow, Scotland, as the VACUOLINE for the Vacuum Oil Company. Entered Socony's
British-flag fleet by merger in 1931.
The former VACUOLINE lifted out of San Francisco for Australia and New Zealand, with most voyages continuing to
Palembang, Sumatra, for cargoes destined for China and Japan. Her name was changed to LACKLAN in January 1934.
Five months after the outbreak of WWII, LACKLAN was requisitioned for war service and employed in fuelling warships at
sea as part of the Escort Oiler Service.
After the war the Secretary of the British Admiralty, RV Markham, wrote to Socony-Vacuum as follows: "I am commanded
by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you that during the height of the naval struggle with Germany, a
service of Escort Oilers was formed from among the commercial tankers employed in the North Atlantic. 144 vessels were
equipped for fuelling warships at sea; and in the course of its 21/2 years' existence the Escort Oiler Service carried out more
than 4000 separate oiling operations which involved the transfer of 350,000 tons of fuel in every condition of weather. It thus
took a prominent share in winning the battle of the Atlantic.
"Two ships of your Company have taken part in this novel and often arduous work, and My Lords would be glad if an ex-
pression of their appreciation could be conveyed to the masters, officers and crews of LACKLAN.
