LOA 501'7", Beam 68', Depth 37',16,552 DWT, 133,989 bbls
Westinghouse turbines, cross-compound, double reduction gears, developing 4800 SHP at 85 RPM 13.7 knots.
Launched 30 December 1942 at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland, and commissioned 31 March 1943.
This MOBILOIL was built with slight modifications to the original design of the “M”class ships. The first vessel to bear this name was the Vacuum Oil British-flag tanker Whose name was changed to VOCO in 1931. The second MOBILOIL was built in 1937, and sunk by enemy U~boat action in 1942.
She was requisitioned by WSA on commissioning day and sent at once to the Pacific. Her log shows Majuro, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Saipan, Guam, Manus and Leyte as ports of call.
On her shakedown voyage along the US east coast, circumstances led to the unofficial conclusion that MOBILOIL had accidentally rammed and rendered helpless a German U-boat, which was later captured. The incident occurred on 22 April 1943, about 35 miles southeast of Cape Lookout.
In the early hours of that day, a listening device indicated the approach of a torpedo from starboard. Course was changed, and the torpedo Was avoided. Shortly after, MOBILOIL struck an underwater object with a jolt felt throughout the ship.
Arriving in port, MOBILOIL learned that an enemy submarine with a damaged conning tower had been captured off Cape Lookout. The circumstances added up to a possibility, in the minds of the officers and men of MOBILOIL, that this damaged U-boat was the underwater object they had struck. However, the evidence was not conclusive enough for official recognition.
MOBILOIL was demobilised in November 1945, and re-entered Socony-Vacuum service.
Renamed as TAMHA in 1959 she contineud her service. In 1962 she sold as SANDS PIONT to Pacific Sg Corp.
Sold in 1963 as ELENA LISA to Pan American Tankers Corp.
Sold for breaking up in 1964.
