Launched 17 February 1953 at Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company, Chester, Pennsylvania. Commissioned 24 April 1953.
Put under Panamanian registry and assigned to the marine subsidiary Brilliant Transportation Company which changed its name
to Mobil Tankers Co. S.A. in 1956. Ownership was later transferred to Iberian Tankers Company.
Wapello, head chief of the Fox tribes abided faithfully by the terms of the 1804 treaty removing his people west of the Mississippi.
The ship Wapello was a shipyard design, but in this instance Socony-Vacuum was permitted modifications which resulted in practically
our own design. The vessel was jumboised in 1964, by adding a new forebody which increased the SDWT from 30,117 to 53,657. The old
forebody was later joined to machinery section of T-2 tanker SANTA HELENA (built as GLACIER PARK, Kaiser # 57 ).
In 1967, while sailing in fog, she missed the channel buoy and ran aground in the Sandy Hook channel off the coast of New Jersey.
She was lightened and refloated with tug assistance after sustaining some bottom damage. She lost her propeller in 1969 in Lake
Maracaibo, Venezuela. While under tow to Curacao for repairs, the tow collided with Esso Aruba - and during repairs,
she suffered a fire in one of the cargo tanks.
She was sold for scrap in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in March 1977.
